Donald Elfman/The New York Jazz City Record "I probably inherited my love of nature from my father, a professor and endangered species biologist, but it was an excursion in fourth grade that really opened my eyes to the beauty of Californias native flora. I remember excitement over the idea that so many flowers grew freely scattered in meadows or hillsides, their random placement and mixed colors delightful. With friends over the years, wed explore the rugged coastline and redwoods of Big Sur, back - pack through Sequoia groves and mountain bike in the Rockies. To this day, time outdoors is my favorite way to go. But now I experience in nature not only sunshine for my soul, I now see universal truths in abundance. Are the naturally scattered landscapes similar to jazz improvisations? Are my musical explorations new paths for me to discover? I also see the strengths and challenges of all life mirrored around me. As I write this, California is experiencing a long and severe drought, and yet the warmer waters have brought abundance for marine life more whales, fish, lobster, squid and shore birds of all types seem to be thriving, even as our agriculture is diminishing with the heat. When I see nature recovering, re-balancing, and constantly creating new riches for us to enjoy, it renews me. No matter what happens, the sun will set today, and it will rise tomorrow, and both will be a moment worth experiencing. Musically I have always tried to capture that feeling of joy and freedom that I feel outdoors, and sometimes my band mates comment on this that as they play with me, so Ive expanded on these concepts for this recording. I wanted to note that Duke Ellingtons Sunset and the Mocking Bird was written for Queen Elizabeth II in 1959 a part of his and Billy Strayhorns Queens Suite. The title for The Sky is the Ocean, was inspired by a line of poetry by Erren Geraud Kelly. In addition, to authentically convey nature, the photos by photographer Steven Lippman, were taken on the roof of an abandoned structure high above the Santa Monica Mountains over looking Malibu Point."
